Finalist Stories

The Dark Alleyway
There was once a boy named Albert, who liked to chill out and play video games instead of doing his homework.  Britney, on the other hand, usually LOVED doing her homework, but lately she had been worrying about what she should be for Halloween. She kept on changing her mind.  Britney and Albert have been best friends since they were in kindergarten. Now they are ten.
It’s a week before Halloween and Albert and Britney can’t wait until Halloween night.  They even have their route planned out. There is one place where you can take a short cut and they are not sure if they should go there. They decide they will try it.
At lunch in school, Albert said “I’m being Harry Potter for Halloween. I have a scar for my forehead, a black velvet robe and a tie that goes perfectly with the robe.”  He continued, “I also have a wand for my costume. Britney what are you going to be?”
Britney thought, but still couldn’t decide. “I’m not sure - I have a couple of options,” she explained to Albert. “I think I’m going to be a witch - I have a fantastic witch costume.  I even have a plastic pointy nose,” she described.
Both friends finally felt ready for Halloween and couldn’t wait for it to come.  Britney thought about the route they had planned for trick or treating. “Albert tomorrow I don’t think we should go trick or treating by ourselves”, she started “maybe we can ask some friends to come trick or treating with us.”  Albert agreed and they decided to ask Anna, Julia and Ryan to go along.
That evening when Britney put her costume on she was beside herself with excitement. She only had to wait one more hour! She decided to call Albert to talk about that strange alleyway.  They discussed it and Albert still wanted to go.
Halloween was finally here! It was time to go trick or treating! All Britney needed to do was to walk over to Albert’s house. Anna, Julia and Ryan were getting dropped off there. She arrived and went in.  “Hi,’’ said Britney, “are you all ready to go trick or treating?” “Yes”, they all replied. So they all went trick or treating at Albert’s neighbours’. It was time to go down the alleyway.
As they walked down the alleyway, Britney said “it seems really dark down here. Are you sure we should go?”
Either Julia or Anna said “Don’t be scared!” It was so dark Britney couldn’t tell who was speaking.
 “Wahahahahah hehehehehe.”
“Oh! Albert, stop making those noises!” said Britney who was really getting frightened.
“I’m not making noises,” Albert said, now also frightened. Then he screamed “Ouch! I tripped over something.”
“What’s that noise that then I hear?” said Britney in a panicky voice. “I I I think bats are chasing me.”  Something scratched her face and her arm.
“It’s ok,” Anna said, sounding relieved.  “I see light.”  Britney assured her friends she was going to be okay.
They went back to Albert’s and agreed they would never go down the alleyway again.
The next day at school Albert and Britney brought some of their candy in for lunch. Albert and Britney went over to their friend Allen and asked him how his trick or treating went. Allen just laughed and said “Didn’t you know it was me making the noises in the alley last night?”
“Allen, why did you do that and how did you know we were going there? Not only that, but how did you make the bats attack me?”  asked Britney.
“I overheard you talking about your plan,” explained Allen “and I only made the noises; I don’t know what chased you.”
Everyone was quite.   To this day they all wonder what chased them in the alleyway that night.
